How to Record Outlets and Lights in a Rental

Outlets, switches and lights are easy to miss because they appear in many rooms and may be hidden by furniture. Recording location, label and visible condition makes a handover clearer, but an observation does not prove that a system is safe. RoomLedger organizes the checklist, photos and repair requests; it is not an electrical inspection.

Count by room

Follow a fixed route and record each outlet, switch, ceiling light, wall light and supplied fitting. Use a location such as “right wall of the door” rather than random numbers. Take a wide photo and a detail of a label or defect. If furniture blocks access, mark it not reachable and return later.

Describe what you see

Record a cracked or loose faceplate, burn mark, exposed wire, missing switch cover or missing bulb. Do not touch an abnormal part, remove a plate or repair it yourself. Do not call something safe or compliant based only on a photo. If there is burning smell, sparking or unusual heat, avoid use and contact the appropriate urgent channel.

Record test status and repairs

Distinguish not tested, tested within the permitted method and unable to determine. If a technician tested it, record person, date and tool; turning on one light is not a whole-system inspection. Start with RoomLedger. Create one item per area or fault, link messages and after-repair photos, and keep the baseline report unchanged.

When sharing, state which parts are observations and which need a technician. Count items by room, confirm photos are not attached to the wrong room and record recipient and date. Protect private data in the package.

Note: Do not dismantle or inspect electrical systems yourself; RoomLedger does not replace an electrician, lease or local rules.
