How Does iPhone LiDAR Measure a Room? What to Know Before You Scan

LiDAR helps some iPhone Pro models estimate distance and the shape of a space. In RoomLedger, a LiDAR scan can record a room, an approximate area, and a model that you can review in a property record.

The important distinction is accuracy. This is a fast documentation tool for home inspections and inventory, not a professional survey. Results depend on the device, light, obstructions, reflective surfaces, and how you move through the room.

Do you need an iPhone Pro?

Not every RoomLedger feature requires LiDAR. With a supported iPhone Pro, you can scan a room for a floor plan and approximate area. On another iPhone, you can still take photos, use AR measurement when available, or enter dimensions manually. Checklists, notes, signatures, reports, and exports remain useful without LiDAR.

Prepare before scanning

Read the floor plan and area as estimates. They can help you remember layout, compare rooms, or document the inspection range. For construction, legal boundaries, or precise material calculations, use an appropriate measuring tool or professional.

RoomLedger combines a measurement with photos and notes. For example, you can save an approximate area, photograph a wall, and note that a cabinet blocks part of the baseboard. That record is more useful than a number without context.

If LiDAR is unavailable, use photos, AR measurement when supported, or a tape measure. Record the unit and where the measurement was taken. Start documenting rooms with RoomLedger.

Note: RoomLedger measurements are approximate. The app is not a surveying, architectural, or legal instrument.
