How to Create a Household Inventory with RoomLedger
A home inventory is a list of household property with photos and details that help you find, move, insure or review it later. A list of names alone is not enough when two items look alike or you need to show their source. RoomLedger can combine rooms, photos, brand, model, serial number, estimated value and related files, but every field still needs a clear source and limitation.
Start with rooms and important items
Create a property, divide it into rooms and prioritize valuable items, serial-numbered equipment, warranties and insurance-relevant property. Take a wide photo for context, a label photo for the serial number and a detail photo for condition. You do not need to enter every small item in one day; work in sessions so descriptions stay accurate.
Record useful fields
Use an understandable name, location, brand, model, serial number, purchase date, purchase price or estimate source, condition and review date. If a number is estimated, say where it came from and do not call it a professional valuation. Attach receipts or warranties only where access is appropriate. When an item moves, is repaired or sold, keep the change in a timeline.
Package and test the files
RoomLedger can export PDF for reading, CSV for filtering and ZIP for images or related files. Start with RoomLedger. Open the PDF, check that room names and item names are correct in the CSV, and open random images in the ZIP. Save a backup and test restoration regularly, especially before changing phones or deleting the app.
Protect the data
An inventory may contain an address, serial numbers, receipts, valuable property and insurance information. Share only the required scope, remove unrelated data from an external package and limit edit or delete permissions. Do not post the whole inventory in a public or shared group.
An inventory organizes evidence; it does not decide compensation or whether an insurer accepts a claim. Ask the recipient about format, photos, valuation and update dates before submitting. After recording high-value items, review accessories such as remotes, chargers, keys, manuals and receipts. If an item changes rooms, update its location while keeping history.
Note: RoomLedger is not a valuation, insurance or legal-advice service.
