Measuring a rental for the first time with RoomLedger
First-time renters often need to know whether furniture will fit and what condition the home was in at move-in. RoomLedger combines photos, measurements, inventory, meter readings and notes in one property. Treat phone measurements as estimates and keep dates, units and locations clear.
Before the inspection
Prepare a room list, a tape measure if available, the furniture dimensions you need and questions for the landlord or manager. Find out where meters, keys and included appliances are located. Check the lease for inspection forms and deadlines for reporting damage.
During the walkthrough
Take a wide photo of each room, then close-ups of scratches, moisture, appliances, locks and serial labels. Measure only what you need, record the unit and method, and label AR or LiDAR results as estimates. Describe an issue precisely instead of writing only “damaged”.
After the visit
Compare measurements with furniture plans, but do not install or alter the property based only on an app. Export a PDF for reading, a CSV for filtering or a ZIP for related photos. Open the files, record the date and report issues through the channel in the lease.
RoomLedger helps you create a record from the start. See RoomLedger.
Note: The lease, signed inspection form and local rules remain the primary evidence.
