RoomLedger Family Inventory: How to Start a Home Asset List
A home inventory is a list of belongings you want to remember, insure or manage. RoomLedger can capture each item, brand, model, readable serial number, value, purchase date and receipt, then export PDF or CSV. A useful inventory does not need to be finished in one day; it needs structure and regular updates.
Start by room
Choose a small room, take a wide photo and add valuable or warrantied items. Record an understandable name, brand, model, serial, seller, purchase date and reference value when known. If the serial is on a label, take a close-up but keep a wider photo showing where the item is.
Receipts and photos may contain private data, so use appropriate access controls. Do not invent a current value; label it as purchase price, estimate or “needs valuation.”
Export and update
Use inventory PDF for quick reading, CSV for filtering and ZIP for images and related files. Open a test export and date it. Update after buying, selling, moving or repairing a major item. If the inventory is for insurance, ask what evidence and format the insurer accepts.
RoomLedger organizes information but does not guarantee compensation. See RoomLedger.
Review every year
Choose a fixed date to check new items, sold items, changed serials and missing receipts. Open random images in the PDF or ZIP. If an insurer requires a format, retention period or professional valuation, follow that guidance rather than relying on the app alone.
For a family, agree who may update and export. When an item moves rooms, update its location instead of creating a duplicate. Prioritize hard-to-replace items and proof of ownership first.
Note: Values and inventory acceptance depend on the insurer and policy.
